THE FIRST WITNESS OF CHRIST’S RESURRECTION

HOME OF ARTICLES

“Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons.” (Mark 16:9 NKJV)

Although Mary Magdalene was not one of the twelve closest disciples of Jesus, she was the first person He appeared to after He rose triumphantly from the dead, even before He ascended to His Father.

Mark records, “Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons.” (Mark 16:9 NKJV).

It was a great honor and privilege for Mary Magdalene to be the first witness of the resurrection of Christ!

Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.'” (John 20:16-17 NKJV).

But why would the risen Lord Jesus first appear to Mary Magdalene and not to any of His closest disciples?

What is so special about Mary Magdalene for the Lord Jesus to choose and honor her as the first witness of His resurrection?

It is undoubtedly wisdom for us to find out!

First, Mary truly loved the Lord and was grateful to the Lord.

It is interesting to note that before Mary Magdalene met Jesus, she was tormented, oppressed, and possessed by seven demons. However, the Lord Jesus showed her mercy, cast all the seven evil spirits out of her, and restored her soul.

Afterward, Mary followed the Lord closely and served Him wholeheartedly and passionately, not for miracles as the multitude, but as an expression of her love and gratitude (Luke 8:1-3). That was why, even after the death of the Lord, she was still seeking to minister to the Lord.

What love and gratitude!

Some believers today are ungrateful to the Lord for what He has done for them, and rather than ministering to the Lord out of love and gratitude, they murmur and complain about their unmet needs.

Today, many seek and serve the Lord only for their selfish interests or personal gains. God is not bound to reveal Himself to us if we don’t seek Him with the whole of our hearts.

God said, “And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” (Jer. 29:13 NKJV).

The Lord will only reveal Himself to true worshippers and seekers!

Second, Mary was one of the few faithful disciples who followed Jesus through His trial, crucifixion, and burial (John 19:25).

Mary and some women followed the body of Jesus closely, observing how He was prepared for burial and where He was laid (Mark 15:46-47).

While other Christ-followers had given up on the Lord after His death and turned back since their hope of getting more miracles from the Lord had gone, Mary Magdalene continued to follow the Lord’s body (Matt. 27:61). She was undoubtedly a faithful or an addicted follower of Christ.

Many believers today, unlike Mary, are not following the Lord faithfully, consistently, or unceasingly. If you choose to follow the Lord only when it is easy or convenient to follow the Lord, you will not grow in the revelation knowledge of Jesus.

Undoubtedly, the Lord knows and sees clearly beyond our empty professions and insincere actions into our hearts and motives. We should not expect the Lord to reveal Himself to us increasingly if we are not seeking or following Him consistently or unceasingly.

Mary became the first witness of Christ’s resurrection because she never gave up on the Lord, even at His death. She kept following and serving the Lord, even when it seemed as if there was nothing more the Lord could do for her or give her. What a faithful spirit Mary had!

Third, Mary was never tired of ministering to the Lord.

Not only did Mary Magdalene follow the Lord Jesus consistently through His trial, crucifixion, death, and burial, but Mary still set her mind on ministering to the Lord’s dead body.

Mark records, “Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him.” (Mark 16:1 NKJV).

Mary Magdalene was one of the few followers of Christ whose service to the Lord was not an eye service or reward-motivated follower. Even when there was no promise of any rewards or noticeable gains, Mary Magdalene would still gladly minister to the Lord.

As she had provided for the Lord’s need out of her substance when He was alive, she continued after His death. Unlike Mary, many believers in our churches today only do eye service, seeking to please men, gain recognition, and receive applause or praise from the pastor.

Above all, the risen Lord Jesus Christ appeared to Mary before anyone else because of her resolution or determination not to leave the tomb without seeing Jesus. Nothing else would satisfy her hunger to see Jesus apart from Jesus Himself.

Mary was not the only woman who came to the tomb to minister to the Lord’s body, but she was the only one who refused to go home, be appeased, or be satisfied without seeing the Lord’s body.

The Scripture records that when other women had left the tomb, Mary Magdalene stayed behind, weeping and seeking the Lord’s body since they could not see or find it.

John writes, “But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb.” (John 20:11 NKJV).

Mary had also forgotten that Jesus said He would rise from the dead after three days, or perhaps she did not believe like other disciples. But whatever the case, Mary Magdalene would not go home without seeing the Lord’s body.

It makes no difference to Mary whether Jesus was alive or dead; she was in love with the Lord. Whether Jesus could still perform miracles means nothing to Mary because she had decided to love, worship, adore, celebrate, follow, and serve her Lord Jesus Christ with all her heart, soul, might, strength, and resources. What a resolution!

While others would only prefer to have Jesus, who could multiply bread and fish and perform mighty wonders and miracles, Mary Magdalene was pleading to have the dead body of Jesus. What a contrast!

When Jesus said to Mary, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Mary, supposing Jesus to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” (John 20:15 NKJV).

Seeing Mary’s love, passion, resolution, and determination to see Him, the risen Lord Jesus could not refrain from revealing Himself to Mary, even before ascending to His Father.

Beloved, like Mary, if you also seek the Lord Jesus wholeheartedly, single-mindedly, diligently, and passionately, the Lord will not hold back from you but will reveal Himself to you increasingly.

Why not begin today to seek the Lord with the firmness of purpose, just as Mary did?

Prayer:

Dear Holy Spirit, teach and help me seek the Lord Jesus wholeheartedly, single-mindedly, and passionately every day of my life, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

CRUCIFIED, RESURRECTED, AND ASCENDED WITH CHRIST

 HOME OF ARTICLES

“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20 NKJV)

We might miss the ultimate purpose and blessing of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, death, burial, resurrection, and ascension if we remotely regard them only as a significant historical event.

If all we know and believe is that Christ died for our transgressions, rose for our justification, and now seated at the right hand of God the Father, making intercession for us, we are too shallow in our spiritual understanding and revelation of the significance and implications of Jesus’ crucifixion, death, burial, resurrection, and ascension.

From God’s viewpoint, Christ did not just die for our sins and then rose for our justification. We also died and rose with Him to walk in the newness of life.

Paul clearly states this truth in his epistle to the Romans.

Romans 6:4-5 – NKJV

4 Therefore, we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection.

As a born-again believer, God wants you to know, understand, believe, and walk in the revelation knowledge that you were crucified, buried, and resurrected with Christ.

God placed you in Christ before the foundation of the world to share in Christ’s experiences, inheritances, and victories.

Paul writes, “But God has given you a place in Christ Jesus, through whom God has given us wisdom and righteousness and salvation, and made us holy.” (1 Cor. 1:30 BBE).

Ephesians 1:3-4 – NKJV

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,

4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love.

Furthermore, God wants you to understand that not only were you crucified, buried, and resurrected with Christ; you also ascended into the heavens with Christ, and you are now presently seated in the heavenly in Christ Jesus, far above all principality, power, and dominion (Eph. 1:21).

Paul reveals this truth in his epistle to the Ephesians.

Ephesians 2:4-7 – NKJV

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,

5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

7 that in the ages to come, He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. (NKJV).

If you fail to accept, imbibe, believe, or internalize the spiritual truth of your crucifixion, resurrection, ascension, and exaltation with Christ, you have settled for less than what God promised, planned, purposed, or destined for you in Christ Jesus.

Many believers today gladly accept and believe that Christ died, rose, and ascended into heaven for them; however, only a few believers truly believe, confess, and act as one who died, rose, and ascended into heaven with Christ.

This ignorance is the primary cause of the defeat many believers face today in their battles against sin, the flesh, the world, and the devil.

As in a marriage relationship or union where two become one flesh, the believers are perfectly joined to Christ and have become one spirit with Christ.

Paul queries, “Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.” But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.” (1 Cor. 6:16-17 NKJV).

While we might never fully comprehend the mystery of our spiritual union with Christ or how God has placed us in Christ to share in His crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension, we must receive, believe, internalize, or internalize this spiritual truth.

We shall not be able to express, manifest, or demonstrate Christ-life if we fail to embrace or identify with His experience—to see ourselves united with Christ in the likeness of His death, resurrection, and ascension.

Beloved, spiritual understanding, and application of the truth of your crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension with Christ are crucial to your Christian life. It is vital to living a triumphant, overcoming, prosperous, and fulfilling life in this fallen world. It takes the revelation knowledge of this truth for you to walk in the newness of life.

This truth is the primary secret of Apostle Paul’s victorious life!

Paul testifies, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” (KJV).

Like Paul, if you truly know, understand, and believe that you are crucified with Christ, you will quit striving or struggling to live for Christ, but rather, you will allow Christ to live or manifest His life in and through you.

Similarly, when you truly understand and believe you are crucified with Christ, you will cease to live not by your strength or wisdom but by the faith of the Son of God.

Friend, it is time for you to begin to reckon yourself as crucified, buried, resurrected, ascended with Christ, and seated in the heavenly realms.

Why not start today?

 Prayer:

I believe and declare today that I am one with Christ—dead, buried, and raised with Christ, and I am now seated with Christ in the heavenly, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

IF CHRIST HAS NOT RISEN

HOME OF ARTICLES

“And if Christ has not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty.” (1 Corinthians 15:14 NKJV)

In a swift and decisive move to forestall Jesus’ resurrection, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered to Pilate, requesting that Jesus’ tomb be secured until the third day, for they were afraid of the tremendous impact of the news of Jesus’ resurrection would have on the people.

How mistaken they were!

Death can’t hold Jesus, the Prince of life, the Lord of lords, and the King of kings. Hallelujah! Having received Pilate’s permission, the religious leaders secured Jesus’ tomb by sealing the stone and setting a guard—many soldiers to watch the tomb.

But when the set time came for the Prince of life and the King of glory to rise from the dead, having accomplished His mission to the dead, the earth shook, and the guards watching the tomb shook for fear and became like dead men. The pangs of death were loosed, and the stone against the tomb was rolled away (Matt. 28:2-4). Hallelujah!

Then, the Prince of life arose and strode confidently out of the tomb, triumphing over death, holding the keys of Death and Hades (Rev. 1:18). Glory! Hallelujah!

Christ, our Lord and King, has risen from the dead! “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” (1 Cor. 15:55 NKJV).

Our Lord Jesus Christ is no longer among the dead; He has risen from the dead. He now lives and reigns forever. Let us proclaim with the angels, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? “He is not here, but is risen!” (Luke 24:5 NKJV). Hallelujah!

The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is crucial to the Christian faith. Its significance or spiritual implications cannot be over-emphasized. Let us examine what would have happened if Christ had not risen from the dead as He promised.

The main thrust is to show the significance of Christ’s resurrection to God’s plan of redemption of the fallen human race and the Christian faith.

First, if Christ has not risen from the dead, then we are still in our sins.

Christ’s resurrection is valid evidence or proof that God accepted His death as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Under the Old Covenant, the return of the high priest alive from the Holy Place, where he goes once a year to present to God the blood of the sin offering as an atonement for the sins of the entire nation of Israel, signifies that God accepts the sacrifice and has forgiven the sins of His people (Lev. 16).

Similarly, Christ’s resurrection confirms that God has forgiven our sins.

Paul states that Christ “was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.” (Rom. 4:25 NKJV).

If Christ has not risen, there is no justification for us!

Paul writes, “And if Christ has not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!” (1 Cor. 15:17 NKJV).

But thank God that Christ, our High Priest, rose from the dead. Therefore, we have been justified, no longer in our sins. Praise God!

Second, if Christ has not risen from the dead, there is no gospel or good news to preach or proclaim to sinners.

Jesus Christ still saves sinners today from their sins because He rose from the dead and is alive forever. Christ still saves because He always lives to make intercession for us!

The Scripture states, “Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.” (Heb. 7:25 NKV).

Third, if Christ has not risen from the dead, then there is no hope of rapture or resurrection to life for the Christians.

Christ’s resurrection from the dead is the first fruit of the resurrection of the believers who have fallen asleep and a firm assurance that God will raise them from the dead to reign with Christ at His second coming.

Paul writes, “And if Christ has not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.” (1 Cor. 15:17-19 NKJV).

Christians are the greatest fools and losers if Christ has not risen from the dead. But thank God, Christ rose from the dead!

Fourth, if Christ has not risen, our hope or faith in God is dead, useless, and in vain.

Paul writes, “And if Christ has not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty.” (1 Cor. 15:14 NKJV).

Through the resurrection of Christ, we now have a living hope, confidence, or faith in God that He will fulfill all His good and eternal promises concerning us.

Peter writes, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” (1 Pet. 1:3 NKJV).

Our hope of receiving eternal rewards for all our labors of love, sufferings, or persecutions for the sake of Christ and reigning eternally with Christ at His second coming is dead if Christ has not risen from the dead.

Fifth, if Christ has not risen from the dead, then Satan and Death have not been conquered and defeated.

By rising and striding out triumphantly from the dead, Christ has demonstrated His perfect and permanent victory and power over Death and “him who had the power of death, that is, the devil.” (Heb. 2:14 NKJV).

Christ’s resurrection shows that Jesus Christ is the Lord of lords, the Master and Ruler over all beings or things!

Undoubtedly, Christ’s resurrection is valid proof that He is indeed the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25). Having conquered death for us, Christ declares, “I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.” (Rev. 1:18 NKJV).

Therefore, we are eternally delivered from the fear of death, for in and through Christ, we have defeated Death. Hallelujah!

Sixth, If Christ has not risen and still living, then the believers will not have the Holy Spirit indwelling them today.

The Scripture reveals that Christ sent the Holy Spirit to indwell believers after He ascended into heaven and was seated on His throne at the Father’s right hand.

Luke writes, “This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. “Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.” (Acts 2:32-33 NKJV).

The Holy Spirit is indwelling, abiding, and working in us today because Christ rose from the dead. Hallelujah!

Lastly, if Christ has not risen from the dead, then He is not different from any mortal man.

Christ’s resurrection from the dead is the ultimate proof that He is the Son of God, the Messiah, sent by God into the world to be the Saviour. Christ’s resurrection attests to His deity, sovereignty, or preeminence (Acts 2:22-32). Praise God!

Beloved, you have every reason to rejoice and celebrate the resurrection of Christ Jesus. If He has not risen from the dead, your faith in Christ is useless and worthless, and you are without a living hope. If Christ has not risen, then Sin and Satan are still your masters, and you are doomed forever.

But thank God, Christ rose from the dead triumphantly as He had promised. It is good news that Christ is no longer dead but has risen. He lives and reigns forever!

Share this good news with someone today!

WHAT DID JESUS FINISH?

 Home of Articles

So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.” (John 19:30 NKJV)

The suffering and death of Jesus Christ on the cross were not accidental; instead, it was premeditated or foreordained by God (Rev. 13:8).

When John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him, he proclaimed, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29 NKJV).

Jesus’ death on the cross was the hidden wisdom of God ordained before the ages to restore the fallen man to glory, “which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” (1 Cor. 2:8 NKJV). Hallelujah!

Before the Lord Jesus yielded up His spirit on the cross, He boldly and loudly declared, “IT IS FINISHED!” John writes, “So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.” (John 19:30 NKJV).

Jesus’ last words on the cross have profound spiritual meanings and implications!

What did Jesus finish?

It is wisdom to find out!

First, by His death on the cross, the Lord Jesus has perfectly finished, fulfilled, or accomplished God’s eternal plan and promise of reconciliation and redemption.

God’s plan to reconcile the sinful and estranged men to Himself and to restore the fallen men to glory demanded or necessitated the offering of a perfect sacrifice as a propitiation or atonement for the sins of the whole world so that the demand of God’s justice to punish sinners might be fully satisfied (Rom. 6:23).

The righteousness and justice of God to punish us for our sins were perfectly, entirely, and eternally satisfied by Jesus’ death on the cross (1 John 2:4).

Consequently, the hostility or enmity between God and man has been abolished. The sinful men now have peace with the holy God through the death of Jesus (Rom. 5:1-11). That is why the temple’s veil was torn from top to bottom after Jesus proclaimed, “It is finished!”

Our sins can no longer keep us away from God. Christ has opened for us the way to enter with boldness the Holiest, the presence of the holy God.

Paul writes, “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.” (Eph. 2:13 NKJV).

“Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh.” (Heb. 10:19-20 NKJV).

Salvation is now available to all humankind as a gracious gift from God. All it takes to receive the gift of everlasting life is faith in Jesus Christ, the Mediator between the holy God and sinful men (1 Tim. 2:5).

Second, by offering Himself as an atoning sacrifice for the sins of the world, the Lord Jesus has finished, fulfilled, or brought to consummation the sacrificial system of worship of the Old Covenant.

Christ’s death on the cross implies a total completion and abolition of all the Jewish sacrifices, laws, and rituals. Christ’s death on the cross was a perfect antitype of all the various sacrifices offered by the Jews under the Old Covenant.

The sacrifice of Christ on the cross was the perfect and ultimate propitiation or atonement for the whole world’s sins. All the burnt offerings and sacrifices for sins under the Old Covenant were mere types and shadows pointing toward Christ’s ultimate sacrifice of Himself for our sins on the cross.

In those sacrifices, there is a reminder of sins every year. Why?

“For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.” (Heb. 10:3-4 NKJV).

Therefore, the priests had to stand ministering daily, repeatedly offering the same sacrifices that could never take away sins. But Jesus Christ, by one offering, has wholly purified and perfected us forever (Heb. 10:11-14). Hallelujah!

Consequently, God expects and receives no more sacrifices or offerings for sins. Therefore, it is foolishness and rebellion against God for anyone to seek to appease God with animal or human sacrifices. There is no need for any more sacrifices for sins!

Jesus said, “It is finished!”

Forgiveness of sins is now available to all men through the blood of Christ. All it takes to receive forgiveness is faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work.

Paul writes, “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.” (Eph. 1:7 NKJV). Hallelujah!

Third, through His death on the cross, the Lord Jesus Christ has completely broken, overthrown, and abolished Sin and Satan’s dominion over humankind.

Sin has been judged and condemned in the flesh of Jesus Christ. Therefore, sin no longer has any right or power to rule, dominate, and control anyone in Christ (Rom. 6:14, 8:3-4).

Likewise, by His death on the cross, the Lord Jesus has destroyed all the works of the devil (1 John 3:8). All sicknesses, diseases, or infirmities were judged in the body of Christ on the cross.

Peter testifies that Jesus “Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness–by whose stripes you were healed.” (1 Pet. 2:24 NKJV).

Matthew also testifies, “He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.” (Matt. 8:17 NKJV).

Every curse of the law on humankind for breaking God’s law was abolished through Christ’s death on the cross.

Paul affirms, “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”). (Gal. 3:13 NKJV).

Christ’s death on the cross has unleashed God’s blessings on humankind. Hallelujah!

As a born-again believer in Christ, the devil’s legal right, ground, or license to harass, oppress, possess, torment, or afflict you has been perfectly and permanently revoked or annulled by Christ’s death on the cross (Heb. 2:14-15).

Therefore, the devil will flee when you resist him, for he has no more power or dominion over you. Thus, the Scripture admonishes, “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (Jam. 4:7 NKJV). Hallelujah!

Moreover, the power of death over your life has been shattered by Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. You are free from the bondage of fear of death!

As a born-again believer, you have no cause to be afraid of death because the Lord Jesus has defeated death for you through His death and triumphant resurrection from the dead.

Jesus said, “I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.” (Rev. 1:18 NKJV).

That is the reason why when Jesus said, ‘It is finished!’ and yielded His spirit, “the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.” (Matt. 27:51-52). Hallelujah!

Beloved, when Jesus said, “It is finished!” He says that He has “wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.” (Col. 2:14-15 NKJV).

All the wages, verdicts, or judgments stipulated by the law against you for breaking God’s law have been wiped out by the blood of Christ shed for your sins on the cross.

The devil has nothing He can use against you anymore! Hallelujah!

 Prayer:

Today, I declare that the reign and dominion of Sin, Sickness, and Satan are ended over my life and family through Christ’s death on the cross. I refuse to permit them to reign any longer over my life and family, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
