The Power of Agreement in Marriage Part 1
Definition of Terms:
What is Marriage?
Marriage is the Covenant Union between two mature adults of opposite sexes for the purpose of PROCREATION, PLEASURE and MUTUAL PARTNERSHIP in the pursuit of their GOD GIVEN DESTINY.
Based on the definition above, it shows marriage is an intentional decision to choose a partner of the opposite sex for the purpose of fulfilling a God given destiny, meeting each other’s sexual needs and bringing forth children who serve as their legacy and an extension of God’s purpose for their lives.
What is Agreement?
An agreement means the following:
1. Harmony of opinion, action or character
2. An arrangement that mutually benefits both parties
3. The statement (oral or written) of an exchange of promises
4. Compact
5. Contract.
Based on the definition of agreement, it is obvious that there can be no agreement without the harmony of opinion, action or character. It behooves the couple, therefore, to establish the premise for their agreement or union in the marriage.
I. God
Genesis 2:18 NKJV
And the LORD God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him."
God is the Creator. They must believe that they were created for each other. The couple must believe that God the Father is bringing them together for a purpose. They must agree that it is much more that mere mutual attraction or chemistry that is bringing them together. Without this anchor, they are likely to drift apart during tough times.
Genesis 2:21-22 NKJV
And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
They must remember that God has joined them together. They are in covenant with each other by a God given act of fusion.
II. Vision:
A Vision is a revelation of God’s redemptive plan and your role in it. It is a revelation of God’s plans and purposes for their lives. The couple must believe that God has a definite plan and purpose for their marriage. They must discover God’s original intention for bringing them together.
Proverbs 29:18 AMPC
Where there is no vision [no redemptive revelation of God], the people perish; but he who keeps the law [of God, which includes that of man] blessed (happy, fortunate, and enviable) is he.
Proverbs 29:18 NIV
Where there is no revelation(vision ) people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.
Every marriage that truly enjoys lasting peace is a marriage built on a common purpose and destiny. Unity has binding power. Unity is cohesive in nature. Without a definite compelling reason or purpose to stay together and be together they cannot stay together peacefully for a long time before there’s a strife or quarrel.
The vision must be clear, concise and compelling enough to keep them together. They have to sit down together to determine and define God’s purpose for bringing you together and put it in writing. This is what both of you will be working together for.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 NKJV
Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up.
Marriage is a mutual covenant established upon the Word of God for the purpose of fulfilling a God given purpose. Marriage is two mature adults bonded by a covenant working together for the furtherance of a particular God glorifying purpose.
Based on the two premises above, healthy marriages are founded on God as their author and this is the reason why they treat each other with reverence because they know that He doesn’t take sides. He is on the side of that which is God and right.
Secondly, a marriage built on a vision or a common purpose and destiny is a marriage that enjoys mutual cooperation and an adaptive adjustment from both parties for the purpose of fulfilling the vision and the common good of each one. Selah
