BE SOBER, WATCHFUL, AND PRAYERFUL

 HOME OF ARTICLES

Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8 RSV)

History is replete with men and women who had a good starting but a tragic ending. Many wealthy and thriving people in the early part of their lives later died in poverty and debt. Many people who rose to a high position of honor and influence in the early part of their lives later fell into disrepute.

Having a graceful start in life is terrific, but it is far better to have an elegant ending. It is simply a tragedy to start well but not finish well. Therefore, you need to be sober, watchful, and prayerful.

The Scripture does not hide sad accounts of men who started well but did not finish gracefully. That is not for judging, condemning, or despising those saints but for our learning, warning, instruction, and caution.

1 Corinthians 10:11-12 – NKJV

11 Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.

Romans 15:4 – NKJV

4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.” (RSV).

While starting well in life may be a gift, requiring no personal input or effort, finishing well in life is not a gift. Instead, it requires determination, diligence, soberness, prayer, focus, discipline, and yielding to the Holy Spirit.

It certainly requires nothing to be born into a noble and wealthy family, but it needs everything to keep the family’s good reputation and wealth.

Many children born with a silver spoon in their mouths have died, leaving nothing behind for their children to inherit but debt, disgrace, and dishonor.

Likewise, starting the Christian life, journey, or race is entirely a gift of God!

Paul reveals that God saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.” (2 Tim. 1:9 NKJV).

He further states, For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians. 2:8-9 NKJV).

However, finishing well the Christian life or journey does not entirely depend upon God; you have an active role to play.

While it is true that you cannot finish well the Christian race in your strength and wisdom without the indwelling and enabling of the Holy Spirit in your life, you cannot end well the Christian race without you being determined, sober, watchful, prayerful, sensitive, and receptive to the warnings, corrections, or instructions of the Holy Spirit.

The Lord Jesus warns His disciples to be watchful and prayerful.

Matthew 26:41 – NKJV

41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Luke 21:36 – NKJV

36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.

Mark 13:33 – NKJV

33 Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is.

Apostle Paul also admonishes us to examine or test ourselves.

2 Corinthians 13:5 – RSV

5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are holding to your faith. Test yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you? –unless indeed you fail to meet the test!

1 Corinthians 16:13 – RSV

13 Be watchful, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong.

1 Thessalonians 5:6 – NKJV

6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

Carefully examining the lives of the saints of old who suffered the shipwreck of their faith, calling, or destiny, it is apparent that they were careless and indiscreet, not sober, vigilant, prayerful, or watchful. On the contrary, they took the grace of God for granted and made provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts.

The Bible gives us accurate accounts of their fall and tragic end so that we may learn from them and avoid the same pitfalls (Romans 15:4, 1 Cor. 10:11). Sadly, many believers today are not learning from them, suffering the same shipwreck of faith.

Beloved, difficult times are here, and your adversary, the devil, still prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour (2 Tim. 3:1, 1 Pet. 5:8).

As a believer in Christ, you are not expected to live in fear of the devil, be devil-struck, or be overly devil-conscious. However, you are expected to be sober, watchful, and prayerful lest the devil distracts, derails, or devours you.

The Scripture admonishes you to be “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” (1 Pet. 5:8 NKJV).

Friend, while the Lord Jesus Christ has called you into liberty, you must be sober, watchful, and prayerful lest you make provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts and thus fall into the traps of the devil and become ensnared or devoured by the devil, your adversary.

Romans 13:11-14 – BBE

11 See then that the time has come for you to be awake from sleep: for now is your salvation nearer than when you first had faith.

12 The night is far gone, and the day is near: so let us put off the works of the dark, arming ourselves with light,

13 With right behaviour as in the day; not in pleasure-making and drinking, not in bad company and unclean behaviour, not in fighting and envy.

14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not give thought to the flesh to do its desires.

It is wise to heed Paul’s admonitions!

Prayer:

My Dear Holy Spirit, teach and strengthen me daily to be sober, watchful, and prayerful, making no provision for the flesh or the devil to ensnare or devour me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Our mandate is to preserve the faith of the Apostolic Generation.

YOU HAVE GOD’S LIFE IN YOU

HOME OF ARTICLES  “And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (1 John 5:11-12 NKJV).   At the point of New Birth, the believers become the partakers of the very life of God—the everlasting life. Jesus said,  “ Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life .” (John 6:47 NKJV). John the Beloved testifies,  “ And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.   He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life . (1 John 5:11-12   NKJV). Everlasting life is not a future promise but a present reality, possession, or inheritance of the New Creation in Christ. The Life Jesus gives those who believe in Him is spiritual, divine, supernatural, heavenly, limitless, timeless, or everlasting. It is not inferior in any respect to the Life...

THE PARABLE OF THE TARES OF THE FIELD (Part 1)

HOME OF ARTICLES  “ The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one.” (Matthew 13:38 NKJV)   After the Lord Jesus had privately explained the parable of the Sower to His disciples, He put forth another parable about the tares of the field to the great multitude that was gathered to Him by the sea. Matthew 13:24-30 – NKJV  24 Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field;  25 “but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way.  26 “But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared.  27 “So the servants of the owner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’  28 “He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants said to him, ‘Do you want us then to go and gather them up?’  29 “But he said, ...

KINGDOM LIVING

HOME OF ARTICLES  E niyekpemi Fidelis Oyinpreyebi. KINGDOM LIVING There was a challenge in how the disciples understood the presence of God to be. They had a terrible reverence for that presence. - The presence that killed Aaron’s two sons (Leviticus 10:1-2) - Uzzah died when he grabbed hold of the Ark of the covenant (2 Samuel 6:6-7) - The presence that could kill the High priest if he carnally entered the Holy of Hollies. He had to take many precautions to ensure he was ritually pure and still with a back up priest in case it all goes wrong (Exodus 28:33-35) The presence had strict protocols, living that life was a dangerous one – I believe you will agree with me too. Moses gave them very specific instructions on how to approach the mountain. They could not “come as they were” but had to sanctify themselves.  They had to wear clean clothes and abstain from sexual relations. Once they got to the mountain,  they could not contact(touch anything) or they would die. - They ...
